Valencia VS Barcelona

Having successfully negotiated his way to the top of Spain’s all-time leading goalscoring records, David Villa must now turn his attentions to a fixture which has also been occupying his mind for the last three months.
As impressive as his record at Valencia was, it was perhaps more startling he stayed there for so long, through two years of financial misery before the money-men, and the lure of Barca, finally came callingthis summer.

It's Time Valencia Did Damage To Barcelona  said-Striker Roberto Soldado.Valencia striker Roberto Soldado believes a victory over Barcelona at the Camp Nou is now long overdue.Valencia striker Roberto Soldado insists it is time for the club to record a positive result against Barcelona,  and believes Saturday’s match is as good a time as any to “do damage” to the champions.

Former Real Madrid striker Soldado, who moved to the Mestalla from Getafe during the summer, feels that there is an opportunity to conquer Pep Guardiola’s side, and he told journalists today: “Our last two results in the Camp Nou have been negative, but Barcelona’s players need to win to please their fans, as they are slightly concerned.“We know the importance of the first fifteen minutes of each half. Scoring an early goal would give them a problem and a 1-0 win is enough for us. It is time to do damage to Barcelona in their own stadium.”Soldado also added that the team cannot possibly consider the midweek Champions League match versus Rangers until the Barcelona match has been concluded.

After finishing joint top-scorer in South Africa with Germany’s Thomas Muller, winning the World Cup and then becoming Spain’s record goalscorer in midweek, Villa’s 2010 has gone rather swimmingly so far.But Villa’s form is not an isolated case as while they are unsurprisingly fourth in La Liga, the Blaugrana still don’t look the side they were six months ago.

Defeat against Hercules last month was a huge shock but perhaps more troubling was the draw with Mallorca, where Guardiola’s side dominated for huge swathes of the game. but could not find their killer touch.

Which is precisely what €40m (Dh205.9m) was supposed to buy them when they signed Villa.

Captain Carles Puyol insists their lack of ruthlessness has to stop and is relishing today’s contest.

Puyol said: “It is not normal that we have let five points go against teams that are theoretically lower than us. Teams have been highly motivated against us and have shown that anyone can beat anyone. Things are very even.

“Valencia are a solid team and it will be difficult. They saw important players leave, but other good ones have joined and we will have to be attentive. If they continue playing like they have been then they could stay up there. They are one of the best teams at the moment.”

Villa successfully completed training yesterday after picking up a minor injury in the 3-2 win over Scotland for Spain while both Xavi and Pedro were also surprise participants, having initially thought to be struggling for the match.

Puyol added: “They are important players for us and I am pleased that they have recovered. I hope that they can play. Villa is one of the best strikers in the world and will score a lot of goals. I do not understand anyone that doubts Xavi. His statistics show everything. He always wants to play. If he is not playing it is because he is injured.”

For La Liga table-toppers Valencia, the game at the Nou Camp will represent a strange situation for many of their players, having worked with Villa for so long.

Their new talisman, Juan Mata, grew up through the club’s academy and witnessed Villa’s progress before finally earning the honour to play in the same side.

Now they are at opposite ends of the field and the young Spainard admits it will be a bizarre scenario but not one that should detract from the prize at stake.

Mata said: “It will be strange seeing him with another shirt because he is a great player and a great friend, but what I think about is winning. It could be a good time to play them. Also, because it always seems that games just after breaks for internationals are the most difficult for them.”Talk of a potential title has been wisely downplayed but should Unai Emery’s team succeed, they will be a difficult contender to ignore.

Valencia is on top

Valencia remain in a great position of La Liga following a comfortable victory over Athletic Bilbao on Saurday evening.Valencia took the game by force from the kick off and put Bilbao under intense pressure. Mehmet Topal and Manuel Fernandes took control of the midfield early on and the hosts looked threatening from the outset. The dominance exhibited by Los Che paid dividends as Aduriz put the home side in front after eleven minutes from a close range header. But it was the slick build-up play which excited the Mestalla faithful. Pablo Hernandez played a delightful back-heel pass into the path of Roberto Soldado, who burst into the box and shrugged off a defender before sending the ball across for the forward to finish.

Valencia’s onslaught was relentless as Juan Mata, Aduriz and Topal all had shots that were close to finding the target, but hosts enjoyed most of the play down the flanks with the full-backs more than happy to push forward. Jeremy Mathieu particularly impressed on the left.In response Los Leones could only manage brief excursions into Valencia's half and even then they did not hold onto the ball for long as Emery's side displayed an impressive desire to regain possession.

The two heavyweights of Spanish football take on each other in what is anticipated to be a very exciting encounter at the Nou Camp. Valencia and Barcelona have a long and historical rivalry in the Spanish football league and thus one can expect the up-coming match between the two clubs to be full of tension as Valencia currently occupy the top spot in the Spanish Primera Division rankings.
However, that is not all. Barcelona’s slow start to the season has meant that they are currently in the 4th place in the league table and a win over Valencia will propel them to the top of the table; given that results elsewhere go favourably as far as the Catalonians are concerned.

Valencia on the other hand will be looking to take things as they come. Their start to the season has been immaculate. The only dark patch on their “clean” start came in the UEFA Champions League when they lost to Manchester United at the Mestalla Stadium in a group stage matchup.

Valencia’s financial situation might not be as sound as other club’s in the Spanish league but their performances have certainly done the Los Che’s proud. Valencia’s match against Barcelona will be their 7th of the season in the Spanish Primera Division of league football. Valencia began their league season with an emphatic 3-1 win over Malaga, away from home.

From thereon in, it has been a steady rise to the top for the Spanish giants who have struggled in the recent season to match the might of Real Madrid and Barcelona. In their second league match of the season, Valencia hosted Racing Santander and easily defeated the Spanish minnows by 1-0.

In their third match, Valencia took on the newly promoted Hercules Alicante and bested the men who defeated Barcelona at Nou Camp by 2-1. After the match with Hercules, Valencia played host to Atletico Madrid which was a difficult match for the men from the city of Valencia.

In the end, the match concluded with the score line at 1-1. Since then, Valencia managed to win both their last two league games against Sporting Gijon and Athletic Bilbao. Conversely, Barcelona began their league campaign with an authoritative three goal win against Racing Santander but then lost their second league match to Hercules Alicante at the Nou Camp.
Despite the fact that they won their third match in the Spanish Primera Division by 2-1 against Atletico Madrid, Barcelona have not been in the best of form this season. They have impressed in some matches but in most of their league encounters, the Catalonian fans have been waiting to see the full force of their team.
Alternatively, Joaquin will be looking to do the same thing for his home side. The Spanish national winger has been given the team’s arm band after Silva and Villa left and thus he has stepped up to set an example as a leader of the team. With two goals already this season, Joaquin Sanchez has all the ability in the world to inflict another defeat on Barcelona in the 2010-2011 Spanish league season.

 KEYS TO THE SERIES

The biggest may be how each team's star rebounds from injury. Hamilton, among the favorites for American League most valuable player, sat out most of September because of two broken ribs but played three games over the weekend against the Angels and looked good, hitting a home run in one. Longoria has been sidelined since Sept. 23 because of a left quadriceps strain but worked out Monday and will start Game 1. The Rays aren't on a roll -- they were 4-6 against Seattle, Baltimore and Kansas City in their last 10 games -- and they aren't that strong offensively. But they led the league with 173 stolen bases, and Rangers catchers threw out only 19.6% of runners trying to steal, so that could work in Tampa Bay's favor. The Rays have one of baseball's best pitching staffs, led by Price and lock-down closer Rafael Soriano. But the Rangers are almost as deep and talented in the rotation and just as strong in the bullpen, with hard-throwing rookie closer Neftali Feliz. Andrus and Young need to get on base and Cruz and Kinzler need to deliver some big hits to force the Rays to pitch to Hamilton and Guerrero. The Rangers, who were a combined 0-12 at New York, Minnesota and Tampa Bay this season, will also have to win on the road.

In seeking their first franchise postseason home game win and series sweep, the Rangers sent Colby Lewis to the mound to face the Rays' Matt Garza. The Rays were counting on the 2007 ALCS MVP to come through once again and prevent a sweep
The Rangers struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Mitch Moreland hit a lead-off double in the bottom of the third inning, advanced to third on a passed ball by Rays catcher John Jaso, then scored on Elvis Andrus's RBI ground-out.

After being shut down for 16 consecutive innings in this series, the Rays finally got back to life. After walking Evan Longoria, Lewis was replaced by reliever Derek Holland. The next hitter Matt Joyce hit a ground ball to Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler. Longoria was out at second base, but Joyce was ruled safe at first on a close play. Dan Johnson singled, but Joyce was tagged out at second base after a failed attempt to advance to third. Holland was replaced by Alexi Ogando after walking Carlos Peña. Orgando gave up an RBI double to B. J. Upton that scored Johnson. The game was tied.
Another controversal play occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning when Andrus stole second on Josh Hamilton's strikeout. Garza and Maddon argued with the second base umpire Jeff Kellogg that Andrus' right leg did not stay on base.

Ian Kinsler's go-ahead solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning took the lead for the Rangers also knocked Garza out of the game.

Rays designated hitter Dan Johnson doubled in the top of the eighth inning, then Peña's RBI single scored the pinch-runner Desmond Jennings to tie the game at 2–2. Later John Jaso hit a two-out RBI single that scored Peña. This is the Rays' first time to take the lead in this series.

Carl Crawford led off the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run. Later Peña's two-run homer increased Rays' lead to four.

The four-run lead was enough for the Rays closer Rafael Soriano, despite a solo home run by Nelson Cruz in the bottom of the ninth inning.
