Falcons vs. Saints watching

A week after booting the game-winner in New Orleans' win at San Francisco, Garrett Hartley shanked a 29-yard field goal in overtime. Bryant then had his 41-yard attempt at a win -- however, Sean Payton's timeout to ice Bryant nullified it. He hit his second try.

The Falcons established themselves as a Super Bowl contender. We couldn't have been sure. They looked wobbly in a loss to the Steelers, terrific in a win over Arizona.

In Week 3, in the Saints' den, the Falcons gave the defending champs all they could handle and -- after regulation -- more. There were some costly turnovers in the fourth quarter. Brees threw an interception that was returned 26 yards for a touchdown by Chauncey Davis, that gave the Falcons a 14-10 lead. Brees threw another interception on the next New Orleans possession, but after that he did not screw up again. He led the winning drive and watched his defense preserve it.

The best ....aretha franklin died

Aretha Louise Franklin (born March 25, 1942) is an American singer, songwriter and pianist. Although known for her soul recordings and referred to as the The Queen of Soul, Franklin is adept at jazz, blues, R&B and gospel music. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Franklin No. 1 on its list of The Greatest Singers of All Time.

Rumors of her death began flooding the site on Dec. 27, and though it is true she recently underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer, there has been no update on her condition since she told Jet magazine she was on the mend.

So let's cut out the morbid hashtags, wish her a quick recovery from her operation and try to make it to 2011 without losing any more greats.

Packers QB looks unstoppable

After throwing for a career-high 404 yards and four touchdowns, Aaron Rodgers joked yesterday he had to play well to retain his starting job.

"I was teasing [Matt] Flynn I had to get my job back," said the Packers No. 1 quarterback who sat out last week because of a concussion.

Flynn started that game against the Patriots, but the only quarterback controversy was how well Rodgers would respond against the Giants yesterday at Lambeau Field. Quite simply, it might have been the best game of his career.

"It was fun," he said after the Packers' 45-17 victory. "I had a good week of preparation this week. I think that's kind of where it started. I felt good throwing the ball all week, liked the game plan, liked the things we were trying to do, and once we were into the game, I liked the rhythm that [assistant coach] Mike [McCarthy] had our offense in."

Coughlin said the Giants' inability to stop the run helped Rodgers to keep the Giants guessing. The four turnovers by the Giants' offense also provided the Packers great field position. But Rodgers was deadly accurate with his throws, often beating the Giants when they had good coverage.

"We throw it pretty well," Rodgers said. "We do a nice job 'stacking defenders' as we like to call it. Greg [Jennings] made a really nice catch on the one down the right sideline and Jordy there at the end had a nice catch. That's something we work on a lot."

Airport body scanners, pat-downs to stay, Napolitano says

The nation's controversial airport pat-downs and full-body scanners are here to stay, at least for now.

"The new technology, the pat-downs, is just objectively safer for our traveling public," Napolitano said. "We pick up contraband now, and we pick up more contraband with the new procedures and the new machinery. What we know is that you can't measure the devices that we are deterring from going on a plane."

It was a year ago on Christmas when a Nigerian man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was accused of trying to blow up a Northwest flight to Detroit with plastic explosives hidden in his underwear.

Despite concerns among civil libertarians and many travelers subjected to intimate pat-downs, Napolitano said safety is the No. 1 priority.

Tattle: Hef robbed the playpen with latest Playmate-fiancee

TATTLE ISN'T one to criticize May-December romances, but January-December? When we consider that 84-year-old Hugh Hefner is engaged to marry 23-year-old Crystal Harris, it makes us realize that a possible Mrs. Tattle may not even be born yet.

OK, that's kind of weird.

It's easy to say "Money," but there are plenty of men richer than Hef who haven't hit their midlife crisis yet and would happily wed a Playmate.
Fame? Not only will the future Mrs. Hef get her photo in magazines constantly (some even with clothes on), she also gets her run of the Playboy Mansion, TV exposure and a "job" requiring her to make sure her teeth stay white, her boobs stay perky and she looks good in painted-on lingerie.

Any other jobs are between the happy couple.

Love.Oh, don't be so judgmental. Crystal could have an old soul - or a bathrobe fetish.

Besides, actuarial tables indicate she is likely to have a chance to find "true love" again before she's 30.

There is, of course, the fourth possibility. Anyone bringing a shotgun to the wedding?

Anyway, the story is that Hef (or a reasonable facsimile) tweeted early yesterday that he'd given a ring to Crystal and she burst into tears.Usually she only bursts into tears when he plays peek-a-boo in his silk pajamas.
This would be the third marriage for the Playboy icon. He divorced Playmate Kimberly Conrad last year, although the pair separated many blondes ago.

York looking for a GM - several months too late

The visitors' locker room in the Edward Jones Dome had almost cleared out Sunday afternoon when Jed York appeared and made himself available to reporters. The 49ers' young president began cleaning out the team's headquarters right there, 1,800 miles from home.

Mike Singletary received a de facto dismissal in the locker room when York declined to say whether the head coach would even be on the sidelines for the meaningless season finale against Arizona next week. The actual ax fell after the team plane landed in California on Sunday night.

Singletary's tenure as head coach ended with a 25-17 loss in St. Louis that shredded the 49ers' last playoff hopes and repeated the critical themes of this miserable 5-10 season: aimlessness, foolishness and sloppiness. York had to step in and assure the fan base that the team, now eight years removed from its last playoff appearance, would not hit the same trifecta again in 2011.

Deputy defense minister: Hamas made Gaza into a troublesome abscess

Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai (Labor) said Monday that Hamas has turned the Gaza Strip into a problematic abscess.

"Gaza is like an abscess – a problematic boil. Until they understand what to do in Gaza, nothing will move forward here," said Vilnai while touring the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel on Monday. "Instead of taking care of its people, Hamas is trying to conquer Jerusalem." Tensions along the Israel-Gaza border have escalated this month, marked with a surge of violence and exchange of fire between IDF forces and Gaza militants. This is despite declarations by both Israel and Hamas that they do not want another escalation.

On Sunday, IDF forces killed two Palestinian militants who were attempting to lay explosives on the Gaza border.

An IDF spokeswoman said the troops, later backed up by helicopters, confirmed hitting the militants who had tried to attack them.

"Hamas is responsible for whatever happens in Gaza," the IDF said in its statement, reiterating Israel's position that the leaders of the coastal territory must maintain calm in the Strip.

The Rise and Fall of Mikhail Khodorkovsky

Former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky and his business partner Platon Lebedev were declared guilty by a judge at the culmination of their second new trial in a Moscow district court on Monday.

Mikhail Khodorkovsky was born June 26, 1963, in Moscow, studied at the Mendeleev Moscow Institute of Chemical Technology, where he started building a career as a communist functionary, becoming deputy head of the Komsomol (the Communist Youth League) organization at his university.Later, using his Komsomol connections, Khodorkovsky opened his first business in 1986, a private cafe, and then in 1987, the Center for Scientific and Technical Creativity of the Youth. The center imported and resold computers, as well as a range of other products.

By 1988, he had built an import-export business with a turnover of $10 million a year.

In 1989, Khodorkovsky and his business partners established the Menatep Bank.

In December 1995, as a result of the so-called shares-for-loans auctions, Khodorkovsky's Menatep Group took control of the Yukos oil company. A few years later, he was probably Russia's richest man.

Khodorkovsky and his company initially earned a reputation for dubious business practices, including diluting stakes held by foreign shareholders, notably the American investor Kenneth Dart.

After the 1998 financial crisis Yukos tumbled in value, but Khodorkovsky held on to the firm, dragging minority shareholders into courts to keep control of his empire.

Just two years later however, he was the darling of the Western stock markets, with a commitment to corporate governance, and an image makeover for himself - gone was the moustache and thick-framed glasses.

In April 2003, Khodorkovsky announced Yukos's merger with another oil giant, Sibneft, creating an empire that at its height produced more oil than OPEC member Qatar. The merger later came undone, but discussions continued on other possible mergers including with Western companies.

General strike to begin in Ivory Coast amid dispute over presidency

Alassane Ouattara, the man widely recognized as the Ivory Coast's legitimate leader following a November 28 presidential run-off election, has called for a strike beginning Monday to force incumbent Laurent Gbagbo out of power, Ouattara's spokesman said.
The country has been paralyzed by a political stalemate, and scores of people have died in violence there. International powers, such as the United States, the United Nations and the African Union, have recognized Ouattara as the winner and are urging Gbagbo to cede power. Gbagbo has not stepped down.
A few deaths have been reported among the refugees, including a child who drowned during the crossing of the Cestos River into Butuo. Observers saw malnourished children and people with malaria, respiratory infections and diarrhea.

Teena Marie, 'Lovegirl' singer, who died at 54, pushed the boundaries of R&B by being herself

Mary Christine Brockert, who died at her home the morning after Christmas, didn't always have an easy time of it. She fought with her record companies, sometimes over her insistence she control her music. She was hospitalized for six months after a severe fall on stage in 1988.

She was just 54 when she died, reportedly after suffering a seizure. But Lady T left an army of fans, black and white, who saw both her and her music as simply honest.

Not to mention danceable. Her only real hit on pop radio was the 1984 "Lovergirl," which reached No. 4. On black radio, she had six top-10 hits over a dozen years, also including "I'm A Sucker For Your Love," "I Need Your Lovin'," "Square Biz," "Work It" and "If I Were a Bell."

She was known as a protégé of Rick James and she definitely had a funky side, expressed in her songs and in the way she played rhythm guitar, keyboards and percussion. But a lot of her music was pure rhythm and blues.

"That's what I grew up on," she said in a 1985 interview. "I listened to black radio and black musicians. That's what spoke to me and when I started making my own music, that's what came out."

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Condemns Blasts in Nigeria That Killed 32

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned Christmas Eve bombings in the central Nigerian city of Jos that killed at least 32 people and injured more than 50.

“The secretary-general is appalled by the violence that caused the loss of so many innocent lives,” the UN said in a statement on its website yesterday. Ban “supports efforts by the Nigerian authorities to bring those responsible to justice.”

Blasts occurred in three separate locations in Jos, the capital of Plateau state, on Dec. 24, while attacks on two churches the next day left six people dead in Maiduguri, capital of the northeastern state of Borno, according to police. The government yesterday imposed a 10-hour curfew in Jos, where sectarian violence between Christians and Muslims this year has killed as many as 500 people.

Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer and the continent’s most populous nation, has suffered periodic outbursts of religious and communal violence that have claimed more than 13,000 lives since 1999, according to the Brussels-based International Crisis Group.

The attacks in Maiduguri were carried out by Boko Haram, an Islamic sect operating in the region, state police commissioner Mohammed Abubakar said on Dec. 25.

Jean Ping, chairman of the African Union Commission, also condemned the “cowardly terrorist attacks.” The AU will support member states in their efforts to “combat terrorism,” the commission said in an e-mailed statement yesterday.

Patriots wrap up homefield advantage for playoffs

AFC teams seeking a Super Bowl berth must go through Foxboro, a place where Tom Brady usually doesn't lose.
The New York Jets (10-5) were beaten 38-34 at Chicago, but qualified when Jacksonville lost to Washington 20-17 in overtime. Jacksonville's loss did not finish it off in the AFC South. Indianapolis (9-6) is one game in front of the Jags. That division will be decided by next weekend's games: Tennessee at Indy, Jacksonville at Houston.

Kansas City (10-5) earned its first AFC West championship since 2003 when it beat Tennessee 34-17 and San Diego lost at Cincinnati.

Atlanta and Chicago have qualified for the postseason in the NFC. The Bears have won the North and are in position for a first-round bye. If the Falcons (12-2) win at home against New Orleans tonight, they will have NFC home-field advantage throughout the playoffs as well as the South title. The defending champion Saints (10-4) also get a playoff spot with a victory.

The winner between Seattle (6-9) and visiting St. Louis (7-8) next Sunday will win the weak NFC West.
Aaron Rodgers threw for 404 yards and four touchdowns in his return from a concussion to lead host Green Bay. ... Turnover issues continued for New York (9-6), which is wondering if there was a hangover effect from the previous week's collapse against Philadelphia. The Giants lost two fumbles and Eli Manning threw four interceptions. ... John Kuhn ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass for a score for the Packers (9-6).

Train with gifts for Kim's heir derails

A train packed with birthday gifts for North Korea's leader-in-waiting Kim Jong Un derailed this month in a possible act of sabotage, a Seoul-based radio station which broadcasts across the border reported on Monday.

Open Radio for North Korea, a non-profit station which often cites sources in the reclusive, impoverished North, said the train laden with gifts including televisions and watches came off the rails on Dec. 11 near North Korea's border with China.
"The security service has been in an emergency situation because a train departing Sinuiju and headed for Pyongyang derailed on Dec. 11," the radio station quoted a source in the security service in North Phyongan province as saying.

The city of Sinuiju is a North Korean trading gateway.

"The tracks and rail beds are so old it is possible there was decay in the wood or nails that secured the tracks could have been dislodged but the extent of damage to the tracks and the timing of the incident points to a chance that someone intentionally damaged the tracks," the source said. "It's highly likely that it was someone who is opposed to succession to Kim Jong Un," the source said, according to the radio station.

Winter storm pounds region

A fierce winter storm hit the Vikings-Eagles game like a blitzing linebacker, forcing a postponement in Philadelphia that upset Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell and disrupted travel plans elsewhere in sports.

But, overwhelmingly, the games went on.

The New York Jets were forced to spend the night in Chicago, where they could mull their 38-34 loss to the Bears. The New England Patriots routed the Bills 34-3 in Buffalo, but victory came at a cost. They were unable to travel home immediately afterward. And the New York Giants returned to their team hotel in Appleton, Wis., after a 45-17 loss to Green Bay.

"Depressing. It would've been a lot easier with a win. Nothing we can do about it though," Giants tight end Kevin Boss said. "(Usually) you go home to your family and kind of lick your wounds, but you're stuck here by yourself and it's not going to be the greatest time."Unlike last week's coastal storm that dropped a foot of snow on Cape Cod and other parts of eastern Massachusetts, the wrath of today's storm is being felt throughout the state and well into eastern New York.

"This one for a change is a little further west and tracked closer to the coast than last week's storm," said Brian Frugis, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y.

Blizzard warnings were posted for Springfield to Boston and as far north as the Litchfield Hills in Connecticut across the border from Sheffield, as heavy snow coupled with sustained winds or wind gusts of 35 mph or more were expected during the height of the storm.

Frugis expected the Berkshires to also experience "near blizzard conditions at times," even though the county was technically under a winter storm warning until noon today.

Little Caesars Bowl Game Thread watching

The Little Caesars Pizza Bowl (formerly known as the Motor City Bowl, until 2009) is a post-season college football bowl game certified by the NCAA that has been played annually since 1997. The first five games (1997–2001) were played at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. Starting in 2002, the game was moved to 65,000-seat Ford Field in downtown Detroit, Michigan. Ford Field is home to the NFL's Detroit Lions, and played host to Super Bowl XL.

The Little Caesars Pizza Bowl features a bowl-eligible team from the Mid-American Conference (usually the winner of the MAC Championship Game, although that team is not required to accept the bid; prior to the formation of the bowl the MAC champion earned an automatic bid to the Las Vegas Bowl) playing a bowl-eligible team from the Big Ten Conference. If the Big Ten does not have an eligible team, the game will feature a team from the Sun Belt that meets the NCAA requirement of at least six wins. In the event that the Sun Belt does not have an available team, an at-large team can be chosen.

christopher plummer picture image

Until the 2009 Academy Awards were announced, it could be said about Christopher Plummer that he was arguably the finest actor of the post-World War II period to fail to get an Oscar nod. In that, he was following in the footsteps of the late great John Barrymore, whom Plummer so memorably portrayed on Broadway in a one-man show that brought him a Tony Award...
Plummer was born Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the son of Isabella Mary  and John Orme Plummer, who was secretary to the Dean of Sciences at McGill University. His maternal great-grandfather was Canadian Prime Minister Sir John Abbott.[2] Plummer was an only child. His parents were divorced shortly after he was born, and he was raised at the Abbott family home at Senneville, Quebec, outside Montreal. He is bilingual. He studied to be a concert pianist, but developed a love for the theatre at an early age, and began acting in high school. Plummer took up acting after seeing Laurence Olivier's film Henry V (1944) He travelled by train to gain experience with the Canadian Repertory Theatre (the CRT) in Ottawa. As for him, the future couldn’t be brighter. Finally landing the right smattering of Hollywood movies and roles in indie films, Plummer is now most concerned with imparting some sense of the vanished world he came up in, a world of greasepaint “now all but gone.”

state of emergency new jersey

Senate President and Acting Gov. Stephen M. Sweeney has declared New Jersey to be under a state of emergency in the midst of a winter Nor'Easter that began Sunday afternoon.

He signed the order this afternoon for the state, which was already issued a blizzard warning earlier today.
State offices will also open two hours later than normally scheduled, but essential employees should report to work as scheduled.
"It is vital that police and public works crews are able to do their jobs," Sweeney said. "I urge all residents to take this declaration and this storm seriously, and to stay safe, stay home and stay off the roads."

During a State of Emergency, the government communicates with its citizens through the media, whether it be TV, radio, newspaper or internet. At times, travel restrictions are a part of the State of Emergency, although there are no statewide travel restrictions attached to this announcement.

However, NJ Transit bus service did suspend statewide service 8:30 Sunday night.

States of Emergency allow government officials to recommend specific actions citizens should take to ensure the safety of their families and homes.
In the past, drivers would only have been fined if snow or ice fell off their vehicle and caused damage or injury, state Highway Traffic Safety Director Pam Fischer said.

Now motorists will be expected to clean snow and ice off before hitting the road or face a fine of $25 to $75.

The fines for causing damage or injury range from $200 to $1,000, or $500 to $1,500 for commercial drivers.

The storm, expected to end on Monday afternoon, is expected to drop between 12 and 18 inches on the region.

Boxing Day......What is Boxing Day..????

In Britain, Boxing Day is usually celebrated on the following day after Christmas Day, which is 26 December. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas (see definition in the Oxford English Dictionary).
Boxing Day is a bank or public holiday that occurs on 26 December and is observed in Australia, Austria, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and in some Commonwealth nations that have a mainly Christian population. In South Africa, the public holiday 26 December is called Day of Goodwill, in Ireland St Stephen's Day or Lá an Dreoilín, and in continental European countries the "Second Christmas Day."
