New Zodiac Signs 2011: A Recap of the Changes for Dummies

Ophiuchus is a large constellation located around the celestial equator. Its name is Greek (Ὀφιοῦχος) for 'serpent-bearer', and it is commonly represented as a man grasping the snake that is represented by the constellation Serpens. Ophiuchus was one of the 48 constellations listed by the second-century astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It was formerly referred to as Serpentarius English pronunciation: /ˌsɜrpənˈtɛəriəs/, a Latin word meaning the same as its current name.
images12 New Zodiac Signs 2011: A Recap of the Changes for Dummies

Say hello to your new little friend

If you woke up this morning feeling different, you weren’t alone. However, if you’re more familiar with the stars in Us Weekly than the ones in the sky, then you probably didn’t realize that you and millions of people actually felt different because many of you now fall under a new Zodiac sign. There hasn’t been a change this monumental since the Gap altered their logo, and we all know how well that turned out. Hang tough.

The axis of the Earth changes as it wobbles, and thousands of years after the signs of the stars were first determined, they’re no longer aligned, mostly because the North Star is pointing in a different direction (or something super complicated like that, which is better left for people way smarter than myself to explain explain). We’re off a constellation, basically. And there’s one called Ophiuchus that has been around for eons and is finally getting its due. Don’t ask why or how — just go with it.

So, here’s the new Zodiac cheat sheet:

Capricorn is now January 20 to February 16
Aquarius is now February 16 to March 11
Pices is now March 11 to April 18
Aries is now April 18 to May 13
Taurus is now May 13 to June 21
Gemini is now June 21 to July 20
Cancer is now July 20 to August 10
Leo is now August 10 to September 16
Virgo is now September 16 to October 30
Libra is now October 30 to November 23
Scorpio is now November 23 to November 29
Ophiuchus is making its debut from November 29 to December 17
Sagittarius is now December 17 to January 20

See if your kid can do the math and figure out how, exactly, 13 signs are taking up the space previously held by 12. I would do it myself, but I was told there wouldn’t be math on this. After that, try explaining to your kid what exactly happened in the sky, see if they can actually pronounce Ophiuchus (if they can, have them call and tell me, because I haven’t a clue), and then see if they care about any of this. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

And when you read your horoscope in tomorrow’s newspaper, don’t forget to look for your new sign (and try not to read the prediction for your old sign so you can avoid reminiscing about how good it used to be under the old set of stars). If the old horoscope seems better than the new one, don’t despair — just remember that the chances are good that you’ll forget what you read as soon as you move on to the Garfield comic or the Sudoku puzzle anyway.

The bottom line is this: How much do you really care about the new signs, and how much are reading about it just because you know it’ll soon be a new category on Jeopardy and you want to impress your kids with your dime store knowledge?

Having been a practicing astrologer for years, I can tell you that the charts of 99% of people are extremely accurate, to the point that is scares some people how much information about them I can pull out of a natal or "birth" chart about their current lives and personality. The constellation positions may have changed, the planets and their aspects haven't.
The tilt of the Earth's axis has gradually shifted since the ancient times when the Babylonians determined the dates of the Zodiac. The calendrical rejiggering also supposedly re-introduced a sign discarded by the Babylonians: Ophiuchus, alternatively called the much-cooler sounding Serpentarius.

'Off the Map' Creator Jenna Bans: Hawaii's 'Lost' Locations Were a 'Perfect Fit' with video

As ABC’s iconic Lost came to an end, Jenna Bans saw an opportunity.

The creator of Off the Map, a South America-set medical drama/action-adventure series premiering Wednesday, thought Lost’s Hawaii locations would be the “perfect fit” for an idea she’d been kicking around about a Doctors Without Borders-type medical series set in the jungle.

“The genesis [for Off the Map] came at the same time as Lost was ending,” she said Monday at the Television Critics Association press stop of the Hawaii sets that would be up for grabs once the mystery drama concluded.

“It was a no-brainer to set it down there,” said Bans of Off the Map, which stars Caroline Dhavernas (Wonderfalls), Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) and Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife) as young doctors who enlist for work at a medical clinic set in the tropics.

“The jungle is their pharmacy, their medicine cabinet,” said Bans, whose credits include producing Shonda Rhimes’ medical dramas Private Practice and Grey’s Anatomy.

“[The location] allows us to delve into stories other shows wouldn’t necessarily do.”

“So many docs in this country consider working in a hospital or in private practices as their day job and their passion is going out to these places — often South America — and working with a medical system that’s not as advanced as ours,” Bans said of setting the series in a fictional South America location.”

News for Janet Napolitano and Janet Napolitano photo

Janet Napolitano is the third Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security and is leading our nation's collective efforts to secure our country from the threats we face - from terrorism to natural disasters.
She has initiated a new, more strategic course to strengthen security along our southwest border, deploying additional personnel and advanced technology, while working closely with Mexico to combat violent international drug cartels - resulting in increased seizures of illegal contraband along the border and throughout our country's interior.

Napolitano also has forged a smart and effective approach to enforcing our immigration laws and prioritizing public safety while targeting criminal aliens and aggressively pursuing employers that knowingly take advantage of illegal labor.

She has strengthened the nation's ability to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters by cutting through red tape and expediting decision-making along the Gulf Coast, providing new resources to build resilient communities and bolster their response capabilities, and calling on all Americans to play a role in the shared responsibility of making our homeland secure.

In each of these areas - counterterrorism; border security; immigration enforcement; and disaster preparedness, response and recovery - Napolitano is building upon the skills and resources of this young department by deploying the best that science and technology have to offer; reinvigorating partnerships with state, local and tribal governments and the private sector - our nation's first detectors and first responders; and implementing a bold Efficiency Review that is making the Department a leaner, smarter agency better equipped to protect the nation.

Prior to becoming Secretary, Napolitano was in her second term as Governor of Arizona and was recognized as a national leader on homeland security, border security and immigration. She was the first woman to chair the National Governors Association and was named one of the top five governors in the country by Time Magazine. Napolitano was also the first female Attorney General of Arizona and served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona. Her tenure has been marked with some high-profile slip ups. When an al-Qaeda terrorist nearly blew up a Detroit air plane on Christmas day, Napolitano went on the air to say that the "system worked," despite evidence that intelligence officials had failed to share crucial information that may have kept the attacker out of the country.

breaking news : Brett Favre's sister reportedly arrested in drug bust

The younger sister of football great Brett Favre was arrested Wednesday, along with four others, at the site of a meth lab in Diamondhead.

Hancock County narcotics agents discovered the active meth lab inside a condo unit in the heart of the normally quiet, upscale community. And while the discovery may be a surprise to many, it wasn't to neighbors.Investigators arrested Brandi Favre and four others after Hancock County narcotics officers discovered the active meth lab in a condo complex in Diamondhead, Miss., according to the Biloxi Sun Herald. The five were taken to a hospital for decontamination and then booked.

"She was here, at the wrong place at the wrong time," Maj. Matt Karl, director of narcotics for Hancock County, told the newspaper.

Narcotics officers were still on scene investigating Wednesday night. They reportedly found methamphetamine cooking in the bathtub along with nine grams of the drug, worth about $150 on the street.

The site of the lab is less than 10 miles from Kiln, where Brett Favre and his siblings were raised. Favre currently lives about 85 miles north of Diamondhead on a ranch in Hattiesburg, Miss. "In the past two or three years, I think this is about our fifth one we got in Diamondhead. I mean, you don't think about that," Karl said. "Meth labs in Diamondhead. Yes, they are here. And we're working on them, and we're going to get them out of here."

Those arrested include Brandi Favre, David Logan, Marty Grimes, Alesha Kirkland and Carl Wynn, III. All are charged with manufacturing of meth, possession of a controlled substance, transferring a controlled substance and generation of hazardous waste.

News for Tucson Speech of President Obama

Former Obama White House Chief of Staff, 2008: "Rule one: Never allow a crisis to go to waste."

It's obvious that the Left already had a plan in place to exploit the next violent attack involving any Democrat.

The smoke had not even cleared in Tucson before the Socialist media like Paul Krugman at NYT and the clowns at CNN and MSNBC began flooding the zone with the theme that "this violence was caused by violent political rhetoric," such as the use of ‘crosshairs’ and ‘targeted’ in political ads.
It isn't helpful to say people have blood on their hands when they have no connection to this case. There is no evidence that Loughner was politically involved beyond his obsession with Giffords because he didn't like her response to his question about words and government.

I really hope this country will pull together. I like Flash's idea of learning to apply a fair and objective standard, and better educating our citizenry so that they understand the standard and can engage in civil debate and not unfairly accuse people of a wide range of things, including inciting violence.Three branches of the federal government will travel with President Obama on Air Force One to Tucson today:  Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who was Arizona’s governor,  Attorney General Eric Holder, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, and from the legislative branch Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., along with the Republican members of Arizona’s US House delegation: Reps. Paul Gosar, Jeff Flake, Trent Franks, Ben Quayle, and Dave Schweikert.

This isn't the first instance of this happening, but it is perhaps the worst isn't it. At one end of the spectrum too many politicians try to weasel out by using deliberately obscure language, and here at the other end they use a library of stock phrases from bad 80's action B-movies. I'm reminded most of all by Palin's earlier "someone needs to take him out" aimed at Julian Assange.the delivery on the video is JUST like the ending of He-Man, the boring bit when Adam(?) blathers on about how to be good, share and have understanding...

All About My First Dates said Brad Womack's Bachelor Blog

First of all, thank you for watching The Bachelor premiere! I have received nothing but overwhelmingly positive responses and I can't thank all of you enough for that. It was so strange watching myself and the women on TV! It seems like such a long time ago that we filmed everything and it's almost like reliving a memory or a dream.

In this week's episode, you got to see two one-on-one dates and one group date unfold. They were so much fun!

My first date was with Ashley H. So many thoughts and emotions were going through my head that day. I had SO much going on. I was on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that morning, Dancing With the Stars that evening (that's when I was officially announced as the Bachelor) and then had to rush home to get dressed for my date. I was so nervous when I arrived at the mansion to pick up Ashley. But all the nerves went away as soon as I saw her. She looked gorgeous! I was also grateful to have a very serious conversation with Ashley about our pasts, which are eerily similar. The night could not have gone better. I said that date was the best first date of my entire life, and I mean it. I left that night thinking, "If this is how every date is going to go, I am no doubt going to find my wife along this journey."

Will Obama call for political civility in Tucson speech?

Will Obama call for political civility in Tucson speech?????????????????????????????

President Obama, who has for years bemoaned incivility in politics, must decide Wednesday whether his speech in Tucson is the right time to repeat that message. The White House announced last night that the president will appear at the University of Arizona at an event the school has dubbed "Together We Thrive: Tucson and America." He is likely to make his longest formal remarks since the shooting in Tucson that killed six and injured 14 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

So far, President Obama has not joined the Democrats who have argued the shooting was a manifestation of a tense political climate that is largely the fault of Republicans. Obama's comments have been brief and completely non-controversial, such as on Monday, when he praised the people who wrestled the shooter down to the ground.

Republicans have criticized the focus of liberals and the news media on partisan rancor, arguing that it is wrong to implicitly link the Tea Party and conservatives to the alleged shooter even as little evidence has emerged he had any particular political motive. Some in the GOP have even praised Obama for his measured tone.

Will that change on Wednesday? White House aides have not yet said if the president will simply honor the victims and their families or speak more broadly about the tragedy.

If they want to use the speech to urge greater civility in politics, White House aides won't have to look very hard for language. Obama's speeches in his 2008 presidential campaign were as much about changing the tone in Washington as shifting its policies to the left.

In his State of the Union address last year , Obama said, "some of the unity we felt after 9/11 has dissipated."

"We can argue all we want about who's to blame for this, but I am not interested in re-litigating the past," Obama continued. "I know that all of us love this country. All of us are committed to its defense. So let's put aside the schoolyard taunts about who is tough. .. .. Let's leave behind the fear and division, and do what it takes to defend our nation and forge a more hopeful future - for America and the world."

But if Obama uses such language on Wednesday, it may not unify the country. The comments of Democrats, such as Obama ally Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), who on Sunday invoked several comments by Sarah Palin in discussing the shooting, have made many Republicans wary of the Democrats' motives in speaking of increased civility.

"The aim is not truth; it is to advance The Cause," wrote ex-Bush speechwriter Pete Wehner in commentarymagazine.com on Monday. "It is also about cynical exploitation. As one veteran Democratic operative told Politico, the Obama White House needs to 'deftly pin this on the tea partiers' just as 'the Clinton White House deftly pinned the Oklahoma City bombing on the militia and anti-government people' in 1995.

Many Democrats, meanwhile, don't view the sharp partisan rhetoric as a bi-partisan problem, and may not welcome a speech from Obama suggesting that it is. They argue that Palin, Glenn Beck and others on the right have created what New York Times columnist Paul Krugman has dubbed "a climate of hate," with the left bearing little blame.

China confirms stealth jet test-flight

China confirms stealth jet test-flight...China confirms stealth jet test-flight
Gates said Chinese President Hu Jintao told him the maiden test-flight of the J-20 fighter jet prototype, which could eventually help narrow the military gap with the United States, was not timed to coincide with his visit.

"I asked President Hu about it directly, and he said that the test had absolutely nothing to do with my visit and had been a pre-planned test," Gates told reporters.

Asked whether he believed that, Gates said: "I take President Hu at his word that the test had nothing to do with my visit."

A Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Hu and other civilian leaders at the meeting with Gates did not appear aware the J-20 test-flight had happened before the U.S. side pressed them about it.

"When Secretary Gates raised the question of the J-20 test in the meeting with President Hu, it was clear that none of the civilians in the room had been informed," the official told reporters.

The flight of the J-20 may have been timed to coincide with Gates's visit to signal to Chinese people, including military officers, that Beijing was not bowing in the face of U.S. pressure, said Jin Canrong, a professor at Renmin University in Beijing who specialises in China-U.S. relations.

Ardently patriotic Chinese, including some outspoken military officers, have urged the government to press Washington harder over Chinese complaints about U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and U.S. military activities in seas and skies near China.

"This is a kind of military transparency and it's also possibly an internal signal," Jin told Reuters.

"Some people may feel that China is looking too weak and this is to show some muscle," he said. "This says, 'We're not weak. We're also developing our own technology."

INTERNET ACCLAIM

Beforehand, reports about the test flight of the jet, which could potentially evade detection by foes, in the southwest Chinese city of Chengdu had been widely circulated on Chinese Internet blogs and online news sites.

Tom DeLay sentenced to three years in prison

Tom DeLay sentenced to three years in prison

Tom DeLay sentenced to three years in prison

DeLay is appealing his conviction, but the sentencing is a yet another remarkable development in the downfall of a politician who was feared in the House and earned the nickname “The Hammer” during the peak of his power.

State Judge Pat Priest sentenced DeLay to a three-year term on conspiracy, and then accepted 10 years of probation in lieu of a five-year prison term on the money laundering charge. DeLay faced up to life in prison following his conviction.

“I always intended to follow the law,” DeLay told Priest before the sentence was handed down. “I’m not stupid. Everything I did I had accountants and lawyers telling me what to do and how to follow the letter of the law, even the spirit of the law.”

“Judge, I can’t be remorseful for something I don’t think I did,” DeLay added, according to CNN.

DeLay will be released on a $10,000 bond while he seeks to overturn the conviction.

At the center of the money laundering case against DeLay was the claim by prosecutors that the Texas Republican and his political allies illegally funneled “soft money” in 2002 state legislative races, a violation of Lone Star State election law.

In Sept. 2002, an organization founded by DeLay, Texans for a Republican Majority, donated $190,000 to the Republican National State Elections Committee, an arm of the Republican National Committee. TRMPAC made the donation to the committee in the form of soft money — unregulated donations from corporations, labor unions and wealthy individuals. Federal candidates and the national parties cannot accept such donations at this time.

The RNC unit then donated the exact same amount in hard money — funds raised under federal donation limits — to Texas GOP state candidates.

Texas Republicans seized control of the state legislature that year for the first time since Reconstruction and redrew a number of Democratic-controlled congressional districts. That controversial move allowed Texas Republicans to redraw the state’s congressional districts, resulting in the ouster of several Democrats and helping cement DeLay’s power in the House.

FOREX-Euro pares gains, rally on Japan comments fizzles

The euro pared gains made on Tuesday as investors were sceptical a pledge by Japan to buy bonds planned by a European rescue fund would result in fresh buying in the single currency.

Investors initially saw Tokyo's promise to buy the bonds as a show of support for Europe's struggle to tame its debt crisis. The bonds are expected to be issued by the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) later this month, and will be used to finance Ireland's bailout plan.

But Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda's suggestion that Japan would use euro cash holdings to buy the bonds dampened some of the initial excitement from traders who thought the move might involve fresh buying of the European currency. [ID:nL3E7CB076].

As a result, the euro was unable to hold on to initial gains made on the announcement, analysts said.

"The market sees it as a reallocation of existing euros, rather than fresh net buying," said Chris Turner, currency strategist at ING.

"It's encouraging in a way, but the EFSF is well capitalised and the debt is triple A, so there was never really a concern that they would have any problems issuing the debt."

Tokyo's pledge came after China assured Spain it would invest in the indebted euro zone state's bonds -- an assurance whose impact also proved fleeting.

The euro last traded at $1.2940 EUR=, unchanged from late New York levels, having risen as high as $1.2992 after Noda's comments. Resistance is at its 200-day moving average of $1.3072 while support is at $1.2794, the 61.8 percent retracement of a June-to-November rally.

Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the African Union’s envoy, will return to Ivory Coast this week in a second effort to find a resolution to the conflict, according to an e-mail sent from his office in Nairobi yesterday. Odinga’s trip follows the efforts of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who made an unannounced visit to the country on Jan. 8.

The U.S., the United Nations, the AU and the Economic Community of West African States, or Ecowas, recognize Ouattara, 69, as the winner of the Nov. 28 election. Incumbent Gbagbo, 65, refuses to cede power, alleging vote fraud in some northern regions. Ecowas hasn’t taken any military action since saying on Dec. 24 it may use “legitimate force” to oust Gbagbo.

The bloc “is losing any semblance of credibility,” said Kissy Agyeman-Togobo, West Africa analyst for Songhai Advisory, based in London. “As time has worn on and as the level of support for Gbagbo hasn’t dwindled domestically, perhaps Ecowas is seeing going in could result in carnage.”

The UN estimates as many as 210 people have been killed in violence following the vote. About 25,000 people have fled to neighboring Liberia since the crisis began, and are arriving at a rate of 600 people per day, the UN’s refugee agency said today. Internally, about 16,000 people have fled villages in the west of the country where the political crisis has exacerbated ethnic tensions, according to the Humanitarian Country Team, a group of non-governmental and UN organizations.

Eurobonds

Ivory Coast’s $2.3 billion in Eurobonds recorded their biggest jump on record today after the Finance Ministry told bondholders it is “taking all necessary measures” to pay a $29 million coupon payment that it missed on Dec. 31. The bonds rose 10.6 percent to 41.875 cents on the dollar at 12:22 p.m. in Abidjan, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The government has a 30-day grace period to make the payment.

Ivory Coast, the world’s top cocoa producer, “does not have any other option than taking into consideration the commitments taken in the past,” Ahoua Don Mello, a Gbagbo spokesman said by phone from Abidjan.

The government may pay the money within days, according to DaMina Advisors LLP, a New York-based frontier-market risk advisor.

Michael Douglas has overcome throat cancer, he says

"I think the odds are with the tumor gone and what I know about this particular type of cancer that I've got it beat," he told host Matt Lauer of "Today" in an interview to air on NBC Tuesday.

"I have to check out on a monthly basis now to maintain. I guess there's not a total euphoria. I'll probably take a couple of months of getting checked out. But it's been a wild six-month ride," Douglas said in his first television interview since undergoing cancer treatment.

The experience left him with an appreciation of finite time, he said.

"It's put a timeline on my life," he said. "I'm 66 now. You know, I'm fortunate I've got a mother who's 88 -- she'll kill me -- she may be 87. My father's 94. So, you know, I feel good about those genes. But it's definitely a third act. And so you're a little more conscious of your time in how you choose to spend it."
"I guess curiosity's gotten them a lot of coverage -- sort of following it. And there's so many outlets now these days. I mean, I just feel for all these young kids. I mean, the generations now, with the amount of paparazzi that they have and these video cameras -- you know, you just can't do anything," Douglas said.

"And I resent the amount of imposition on our children, too, because it used to be at least they would try to keep them out of that, and they don't at all (now). They were having -- there was sort of a macabre enjoyment out of sort of watching me go down there for a while, I felt, by the paparazzi," he said.

More Violence as South Sudanese Vote in Landmark Referendum

More Violence as South Sudanese Vote in Landmark Referendum
More Violence as South Sudanese Vote in Landmark Referendum

Southern Internal Affairs Minister Gier Chuang says Arab tribesmen ambushed a bus carrying a group of southern Sudanese from the north to the south, killing 10 people and wounding 18 others.

The attack took place Monday in South Khordofan state.  Sudanese officials have said at least 36 people have been killed in three days of heavy fighting in the country's disputed Abyei district.

Voting in southern Sudan is proceeding smoothly.

The South Sudan Referendum Commission said 20 percent of registered southerners - about 750,000 people - had cast their votes Sunday, the opening day of the poll.  Under terms of the 2005 peace deal that ended the two-decades-long war between Sudan's Muslim-majority north and the mainly Christian and animist south, the vote must have a 60 percent turnout to be valid.

Southerners have until Saturday to vote on whether to remain united with the north or secede.

Most analysts predict the south will vote for independence. Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has pledged to accept the results and help the south, regardless of the outcome.

Jets’ ground game gets Patriots’ attention

Jets’ ground game gets Patriots’
Jets’ ground game gets Patriots’

With 169 rushing yards against the Colts on Saturday night, including 95 that helped eat up 18 minutes of the second half and limited Peyton Manning to three possessions, the Patriots know that stopping the Jets’ ground game is priority No. 1 in Sunday’s divisional game in Foxborough.
"You’re talking about two powerful runners," Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork [stats] said of LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene. "LT can do it all, can catch it out of the backfield, at times he blocks, a great screen guy. He’s put together very, very well as a running back. With Greene coming in, he’s a powerful runner. A young guy, very explosive. He’s hard to bring down, because he’s so tough and low gravity and he runs with power."

Belichick said that while there are primary holes for the running backs to slide through, the Jets always have a backup plan behind Mangold.

"It seems like there’s always a second point of attack, second entry point, wherever his block is," Belichick said.

Rushing yards don’t necessarily mean success for the Jets when they play the Patriots. In their Week 2 win, the Jets ran the ball 32 times for 136 yards. When they played again in Week 13, the Jets were even better on the ground, running 31 times for 152 yards. But they lost by 42 points in that game.

The Patriots’ run defense hasn’t been too shabby, either. They finished 11th in the NFL, allowing 108 rushing yards per game. And they allowed just six runs of 20 or more yards. Only the Dolphins and Steelers had fewer. Patriots inside linebacker Jerod Mayo led the NFL with 175 tackles.

But just as the Jets’ running offense starts with Mangold, the Patriots’ defense starts with Wilfork. Belichick compared the way he keeps offensive linemen off Mayo to the way Mean Joe Greene protected Jack Lambert in the days of the Steel Curtain. "A nose tackle is an inside linebacker’s best friend," Belichick said.

And a nose tackle’s worst enemy? Well, that might be Mangold. Wilfork knows that very well, having faced him many times in his career.

Will Tucson Shooting Spark a Call for Tougher Gun Laws?

American support for stricter gun laws has steadily declined. A Gallup poll from last October reported that 44 percent of Americans said that gun laws should be tougher, a dramatic drop from 1990, when 78 percent of Americans said they supported stricter gun control.

"The very substantial majority of Americans believe that the Constitution does provide for the right of gun ownership in this country, and most Americans don't believe that availability of guns is the prime factor in gun violence," said Gary Langer, of Langer Research Associates, and ABC's longtime polling director.

Heinous rampages like the one in Columbine in 1999 and at Virginia Tech in 2007 did little to change public opinion on the issue. No significant increase in the call for new gun laws followed these massacres.

But Langer noted that the massacre at Virginia Tech triggered a call for other policy changes, such as stronger efforts to keep guns out of the hands of people who've been treated for mental illness, and increased college campus screening for mentally disturbed students.

Gun control activists said there are still too few laws in place, and the ease and availability of guns puts all Americans at risk.

"People have become suspicious of the ability of laws to make a difference, and I think that when they look at shootings like this they think laws didn't stop this from happening," said Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

New York Democratic Rep. Carolyn McCarthy wants to change that perception.

Gates's China visit: Beijing confirms stealth fighter test flights

President Hu Jintao told Mr. Gates that China’s J-20 stealth fighter jet made its maiden test flight Tuesday. The plane is China’s version of the F-22 Raptor, though it is probably nearly a decade away from full deployment, aviation experts say.

Chinese websites had earlier carried photos of the radar-evading plane making a 15-minute test flight from a military airfield in Chengdu, China.

“I asked President Hu about it directly and he said that the test had absolutely nothing to do with my visit and had been a preplanned test,” Gates told reporters after his meeting with the Chinese president. “And that’s where we left it.”Gates is on a three-day visit trying to put often rocky relations between the US and Chinese militaries onto firmer footing. On Monday, he and his counterpart, Defense Minister Liang Guanglie, agreed to set up a working group to study ways of building a firm framework for continuing talks, which Washington has been pressing for.

Gates said the two countries agreed that military relations should be “solid, consistent, and not subject to shifting political winds.” China has suspended military-to-military links for most of the past three years, in protest at US arms sales to Taiwan.

Cam Newton’s season ends with smile as Auburn beats Oregon

Newton flashed a grin in the postgame interview room, answered a couple of questions about the Tigers’ stirring 22-19 triumph over Oregon in the BCS National Championship Game, and excused himself to receive some treatment for a sore back.

There was nothing left for him to say, but one of his teammates wanted to defend the player who had held up dealing with the strains of epic season glory and NCAA dark clouds.

“You know all the things they said about him, he came back and played 10 times harder, ran the ball 10 times harder, threw the ball 10 times more accurate,” said linebacker Josh Bynes. “He was just so resilient. He’s like a perfection description of how we played this year.”

Auburn, pushed to the limit Monday, survived without Newton as a singular force and became the fifth straight national champion from the SEC. Tackle Nick Fairley anchored a rock-solid defense. Running back Michael Dyer became the central figure in the game’s wildest play that set up kicker Wes Byrum, who walked into Auburn lore with his 19-yard field goal as time expired for the winning points.

But as always this season, Newton was the game’s focal point, before, during and after. Would he fall victim to the Heisman curse? Six of the previous eight winners had lost on the stage. Or would he deliver one of his other-worldly performances that made him the runaway Heisman Trophy winner and the primary reason the Tigers, who finished 3-5 last year in Southeastern Conference play, are 14-0 for the first time in school history?

By Newton standards, the performance rates solid but not spectacular by competing 20 of 34 passes for 265 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He rushed for 64 yards and coughed up a critical fumble.

Breaking News : Boy's death takes flood toll to 10

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale says the boy drowned during an attempt to rescue his family at Marburg, about 60 kilometres west of Brisbane.

"Very sad day for Ipswich. We just found out that a four-year-old boy has fallen out of a boat and they've just found the body," he said.

"So it's a very, very sad day for Ipswich and our hearts and prayers are with the family."

Authorities still hold grave concerns for more than a dozen of the 78 people still missing after unprecedented flash floods tore through southern Queensland late yesterday.

There are serious concerns for 18 of those people.

A raging torrent of water swept through Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley, and heavy rain today has again pushed creeks to major flood levels.

Premier Anna Bligh says the number of missing people has been revised up from 59.

"Clearly as we get more information from families who are looking for their loved ones these numbers are going to fluctuate, but we now have 78 people unaccounted for," she said.

"We have 10 deaths and we have at least 18 people for who we have very grave concerns for their safety."

The wall of water is making its way to Brisbane, where rain and storms are lashing the city and the biggest flood since 1974 is expected to arrive in the coming days.

Many towns were either badly damaged or wiped out by flash flooding. Homes were knocked from their footings and cars were washed away.

There has been little progress in the search and rescue operation as police, the SES and fire crews have been battling bad weather.

Deputy Police Commissioner Ian Stewart says police are daunted by the scale of the disaster in the Lockyer Valley.

"Certainly Grantham is one of the focus, but the other one is the Murphy's Creek and Withcott area," he said.

"That's the other area we're having difficulty getting into, and it's going to take us a long time today to get to every one of those areas.

"I mean, the sheer scale of this operation is quite daunting when you look at the number of places and creeks that have been affected."

He says bad weather is hampering search and rescue operations.

Jared Lee Loughner's parents alone with their anguish

The parents of Jared Lee Loughner, accused of shooting Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 19 other people, were huddled in seclusion in their Tucson home Monday night, his father crying and his mother so shaken she could not get out of bed, a neighbor told The Times.

As the sun was beginning to set Monday, Randy Loughner called his neighbor, retired gasoline truck driver Wayne Smith, 70, to ask him to get their mail. Smith, who is not particularly close to the Loughners, grabbed the mail and was invited inside. The parents of Jared Lee Loughner, accused of shooting Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 19 other people, were huddled in seclusion in their Tucson home Monday night, his father crying and his mother so shaken she could not get out of bed, a neighbor told The Times.

Smith described the Loughners as very private and said they knew few people on their street, although they had lived in the neighborhood since before Jared, 22, was born. He said Jared was their only child. Smith said Loughner's mother, Amy, had a good job with good retirement and pay, and Randy was a stay-at-home dad who liked to work on cars.

"He worshipped the boy," Smith said.

Smith said that on Saturday morning just after 11, their quiet neighborhood suddenly filled with sheriff's patrol cars and FBI agents who cordoned off the Loughners' home. Smith said he saw the Loughners come home, with brown plastic grocery bags and bottles of water in the back of their old white pickup truck. The couple parked across the street from their house.

Then Smith saw a TV news report identifying Jared Lee Loughner as the suspect.

"I didn't even know their last name until Saturday," Smith said. But he knew their son's name was Jared.

He approached the Loughners. "I said, 'Guys, I hate to be the one to tell you, but he shot a bunch of people,'" Smith said. Amy Loughner, he said, "just come unglued."

All three wept together outside on Saturday. "We stood right out there and cried for an hour. I'm a softie," Smith said. "A man needs compassion. He's broken up about his son, but also about all those people who died."

Letest news BCS championship

bcs championship
The BCS is one of the most successful events in the history of college football, yet it is often misunderstood. We hope the information on this site will help answer your questions and give you an accurate picture of what the BCS is and isn't.

The BCS is a five-game showcase of college football. It is designed to ensure that the two top-rated teams in the country meet in the national championship game, and to create exciting and competitive matchups among eight other highly regarded teams in four other bowl games. For more on the background of the BCS.
The No. 1 ranked Tigers are led by Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Cam Newton and head coach Gene Chizik. Oregon, led by running back LaMichael James, averaged 49.3 points per game this year. Both squads won their conferences and each has a very high-scoring offense.

Since the formation of the Bowl Championship Series, there have been several controversies regarding the schools selected to participate in the BCS National Championship Game. Most notably, following the 2003 season, the BCS ranking system selected the #3 ranked school in the Associated Press writers' poll, the University of Oklahoma, over the #1 ranked school in that poll, the University of Southern California, to participate in the National Championship Game (the Nokia Sugar Bowl) despite Oklahoma's decisive loss to Kansas State in the 2003 Big 12 Championship Game. 2003 is the only season, to date, since the inception of the BCS in which the national championship has been split, with Louisiana State University winning the BCS national championship and the University of Southern California winning the AP national championship and the FWAA national championship.

Auburn University the best.......

Auburn University is a public university located in Auburn, Alabama, U.S.there are more than 25,000 students and 1,200 faculty members, it is one of the largest and wellknown universities in the state. Auburn was chartered on

February 1, 1856, as the East Alabama Male College, a private liberal arts school affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1872, the college became the state's first public land-grant university under the Morrill Act and was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1892, the college became the first

four-year coeducational school in the state. The curriculum at the university originally focused on arts and agriculture.

This trend changed under the guidance of Dr. William Leroy Broun, who taught classics and sciences and believed

both disciplines were important in the overall growth of the university and the individual. The college was renamed the

Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API) in 1899, largely because of Dr. Broun’s influence. The college continued

expanding, and in 1960 its name was officially changed to Auburn University to acknowledge the varied academic

programs and larger curriculum of a major university.Auburn University has developed into one of the largest

Dean's Letter...........here is the Dean's Letter of auburn university..

As you open this report, I wish to call your attention to some ongoing research efforts within Auburn’s Samuel GinnCollege of Engineering that speak to our faculty expertise in a broad range of areas that impact the quality of ourlives. Indeed, our gifted faculty is responsible for nearly 50 percent of research conducted at Auburn University – withthe value of proposals submitted at just under $50 million in 2009.

The other components of our mission are instruction and outreach. Top notch faculty and facility enhancements areamong the reasons that our 2009’s freshman class included 33 national merit finalists – more than half of the

university total. On the graduate level, we continue to increase our numbers as well, with 766 students enrolled.Combined with an undergraduate enrollment of 3,598, Engineering is now the largest college at Auburn University. Our outreach efforts, including our longstanding continuing education programs, serve students across the U.S., as well as some international locations.
While we have some very real challenges ahead of us that are the result of today’s uncertain economic climate, the numbers in this report validate our vision for Auburn Engineering – to move our programs forward into the nation’s topechelons of engineering by building on a vibrant, wellregarded program that speaks to the needs of the companies, agencies and institutions that hire our graduates.

The support of our donors has been strong, and is a critical component of our ability to excel. Beyond the charts onacademics, research and outreach, I invite you to look at the philanthropy powering our numbers. These figures makea real difference in the support of our faculty through the university’s matching professorship program, the quality ofour students through scholarship programs, and in our annual giving, which is critical to our ability to respond quicklyto new challenges and opportunities.

We appreciate your interest and support, and look forward to an exciting new year.

Sincerely,Signature

About fox 5 atlanta with video

Metro Atlanta was hit with a major snow storm Sunday. Snow began falling Sunday night. You can get the latest information on the storm and what else is in store for North Georgia from the FOX 5 Weather Authority.

The snow line is being pushed further north and east and currently the line is situated from about Dallas to Covington to Eatonton. The line will continue to push north and east through the day, and the other good news is that the leftover precip will start to thin out over the rest of the day. However, light freezing rain is still freezing rain and it will still cause issues on area roadways. The other problem is going to be temps today that will stay below freezing, leading to additional icing through the day and overnight of any moisture that does happen to melt.

The Boston College Eagles football team is the collegiate football program of Boston College. The team is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, a Division I Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A) league governed by the NCAA. Within the ACC, the Eagles are one of six teams in the Atlantic Division. Begun in 1892, Boston College was one of six "Major College" football programs in New England as designated by NCAA classifications, starting in 1938. By 1981, and for the remainder of the twentieth century, BC was New England's sole Division I-A program. It has amassed a 601-419-36 record and is 71-30-0 since the turn of the century. In 2007, the Eagles captured the ACC's Atlantic Division Championship and finished the season ranked in the AP Top 10 for the first time since 1984. They also achieved a mid-season #2 ranking, their highest since being ranked #1 in 1942

Gallery 63 Auction Kings ..video

I wrote about Gallery 63, a local auction site in Atlanta, in March when Discovery was shooting a pilot for the network. The reality program (along the line of “Pawn Stars” or “Miami Ink”) has gotten a thumbs up for 14 episodes to air this fall and it has a new name. Originally “Auction King,” it now has the more pun-tensive name “Bidder Rivals.”

Auction Kings is a reality television series produced by Authentic Entertainment for the Discovery Channel. The series premiered on October 26, 2010 and features the auction house Gallery 63 in Atlanta, Georgia.[1] The series capitalizes on the success of the History channel’s widely successful Pawn Stars and bears a strikingly similar format;[2] the auction house employees often rely on experts to appraise items of which historical background is provided to the viewer. Sellers offer comments regarding the merchandise at hand both before and after the auction. At the second commercial break, a multiple-choice question about the auction house or the items are presented, similar to the questions on Pawn Stars.Somehow Paul Brown doesn’t look old enough OR mean enough to take the place of Pawn Star’s Old Man and Cindy Shook sure doesn’t look like Chumlee. Pawn Stars works not because of the premise but because of those two ‘characters’.

WTOC-TV

On February 14, 1954, Knight took a great financial risk and established WTOC-TV as the first television station in the Savannah area. WTOC radio had long been Savannah's CBS affiliate, so WTOC-TV joined CBS and has been with that network ever since. It carried programming from all three networks for two years until WSAV-TV signed on in 1956 and took the NBC affiliation. WTOC then shared ABC with WSAV until WJCL-TV signed on in 1970. Shortly thereafter, WTOC moved its transmitter & antenna to a new 1500 ft. tower off of Ft. Argyle Road in Southwest Chatham County. This significantly increased its coverage area.

Knight sold WTOC-AM-FM-TV to Aflac in 1979. Aflac sold off the radio stations; the AM station is now WTKS and the FM station is now WQBT. In 1996, Aflac sold its entire television group, including WTOC, to a group headed by Retirement Systems of Alabama, who merged it with Ellis Communications to form Raycom Media. As a condition of the Aflac-Ellis broadcast merger, Raycom had to sell off WSAV, which Ellis had owned since 1995.Saturday overnight: Clear skies; lows in the middle to lower 20's.
