Auburn University the best.......

Auburn University is a public university located in Auburn, Alabama, U.S.there are more than 25,000 students and 1,200 faculty members, it is one of the largest and wellknown universities in the state. Auburn was chartered on

February 1, 1856, as the East Alabama Male College, a private liberal arts school affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1872, the college became the state's first public land-grant university under the Morrill Act and was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1892, the college became the first

four-year coeducational school in the state. The curriculum at the university originally focused on arts and agriculture.

This trend changed under the guidance of Dr. William Leroy Broun, who taught classics and sciences and believed

both disciplines were important in the overall growth of the university and the individual. The college was renamed the

Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API) in 1899, largely because of Dr. Broun’s influence. The college continued

expanding, and in 1960 its name was officially changed to Auburn University to acknowledge the varied academic

programs and larger curriculum of a major university.Auburn University has developed into one of the largest

universities in the South, remaining in the educational forefront with its traditional blend of arts and applied science,

and changing with the needs of today while living with a respect for the traditions and spirit that are Auburn.

Dean's Letter...........here is the Dean's Letter of auburn university..

As you open this report, I wish to call your attention to some ongoing research efforts within Auburn’s Samuel GinnCollege of Engineering that speak to our faculty expertise in a broad range of areas that impact the quality of ourlives. Indeed, our gifted faculty is responsible for nearly 50 percent of research conducted at Auburn University – withthe value of proposals submitted at just under $50 million in 2009.

The other components of our mission are instruction and outreach. Top notch faculty and facility enhancements areamong the reasons that our 2009’s freshman class included 33 national merit finalists – more than half of the

university total. On the graduate level, we continue to increase our numbers as well, with 766 students enrolled.Combined with an undergraduate enrollment of 3,598, Engineering is now the largest college at Auburn University. Our outreach efforts, including our longstanding continuing education programs, serve students across the U.S., as well as some international locations.
While we have some very real challenges ahead of us that are the result of today’s uncertain economic climate, the numbers in this report validate our vision for Auburn Engineering – to move our programs forward into the nation’s topechelons of engineering by building on a vibrant, wellregarded program that speaks to the needs of the companies, agencies and institutions that hire our graduates.

The support of our donors has been strong, and is a critical component of our ability to excel. Beyond the charts onacademics, research and outreach, I invite you to look at the philanthropy powering our numbers. These figures makea real difference in the support of our faculty through the university’s matching professorship program, the quality ofour students through scholarship programs, and in our annual giving, which is critical to our ability to respond quicklyto new challenges and opportunities.

We appreciate your interest and support, and look forward to an exciting new year.

Sincerely,Signature
Larry Benefield, Dean
Samuel Ginn College of Engineering
